A rose makes the perfect flower to represent love. Its vibrant red stimulates the heart of any maiden. However, even the most beautiful rose has its thorns. Appearing during youth, the thorns grow alongside the rose, contrasting with the lustrous bud. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Estella plays the rose of Pip’s life, the object of his adoration, yet always causing him pain. Raised by the heartbroken Miss Havisham from the age of three, she is bred to â€Å"wreak revenge on all the male sex.† Complemented by her radiant beauty, she enchants all men around her and ensnares them in her trap. As a child reared by Miss Havisham, Estella is growing into the compassionless avenger that she is meant to be. As a grown woman, Estella†¦show more content†¦She walks around with an â€Å"air of completeness and superiority† that conveys how she considers herself the epitome of perfection. Mocking and manipulative, Estella believes that she is always the one pulling the strings at her own preference. She discredits romantic love as a powerful force, yet â€Å"[looks] at [Pip]. . .with incredulous wonder† when he expresses how his love for her and her personification of his ideals has, more than anything else, shaped his life. Pip, unable to quell his inner feelings, expresses his longing for Estella repeatedly, only to be rejected each time. He considers himself involved in a â€Å"rebellious struggle in her bosom,† but his unrequited devotion to her fails to penetrate the barrier surrounding Estella’s dormant heart. Estella, rather than attacking men directly, flirts with them and drives them insane with lust. The only liberty granted to anyone is to Pip, who is rendered aware of his chances of earning Estella’s affection, although he ignores it and attempts to appeal to her good nature. â€Å"‘Pip, Pip. . .will you never take warning?’ (Pip)‘Of what?’ (Estella)‘Of me.â €™â€  Estella finally acquiesces to the courting of Drummle, and thus trades those close to her for ambition.
